Local MSP Visits Ferguson Transport & Shipping
On Friday 5th August 2016, Kate Forbes MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch visited the Ferguson Transport & Shipping Head Office in Corpach, near Fort William – to meet with Group Managing Director, Alasdair Ferguson. The visit was arranged to raise awareness of current issues in Lochaber, which include reliable broadband and safer (wider) roads. Mr Ferguson highlighted the notoriously challenging A82 road, which connects the Highlands and Islands with the Central Belt of Scotland, and is a vital lifeline for businesses, local communities and visitors.
In places, the A82 truck road is still currently narrower than the recommended minimum trunk road width of 7.3 metres; compromising the safety of all road users in particularly HGV, PSV and camper van drivers. The reduced width of the road causes the clashing of wing mirrors on a daily basis and an increased risk of rollover accidents by HGVs, especially on parts of the road where there are tight bends and soft verges.
The campaign from Ferguson Transport & Shipping to local governing bodies and politicians has always been for greater local investment. In particularly the A82 trunk road, reliable and faster broadband, better mobile phone coverage and local affordable housing, to help enhance the beautiful and scenic Highlands and Islands of Scotland, making it a better place to live and work.
