Local Haulage Firm Expands Throughout The UK
Ferguson Transport & Shipping, one of the largest independent transport and distribution companies in the Highlands and Islands, were delighted to have purchased the haulage company Skye Transport (Crossal) Ltd in March 2015, a move which increased the firm’s transport fleet size and its staffing levels.
In the last nine months, this has opened up further opportunities with a portfolio of new customers, including Diageo for whisky transport, Harbro, Caley Timber and Building Supplies, Scottish Woodlands, Euroforest, Tilhill Forestry and Norbord, as well as other markets on the Isle of Skye and Inverness. Ferguson Transport & Shipping continue to provide the same high standard and service that the Skye Transport (Crossal) Ltd team have delivered over the years. The growing team of staff and established business developments in road, rail, sea and port facilities makes Ferguson Transport & Shipping one of the fastest-growing transport logistics companies in Scotland.
Ferguson Transport & Shipping operate a fleet of 70 plus modern commercial vehicles and over 170 trailers distributing a wide range of general goods including forestry, aquaculture, general haulage, fertiliser, agriculture, chemicals, oil, gas and energy related products. The main base is in Corpach, with other operating centres in Kishorn, Isle of Skye, Kyle of Lochalsh, Mallaig, Inverness, Invergordon, Grangemouth, Glasgow and Penrith.
All six shipping vessels operate from the company’s own port facilities at Kishorn and also work out of Mallaig and Kyle of Lochalsh, working primarily on the west coast of Scotland, including the Western and Northern Isles as well as Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Ferguson Transport & Shipping’s rail distribution service carries goods throughout the UK from Corpach via Grangemouth by rail and road. This is part of the company’s commitment to intermodal freight services, through modal shift from road to rail and sea, also helping to reduce the company’s carbon footprint in line with government policy and customer expectations.
The family business has over 190 invaluable staff members, of which approximately over 80 are drivers and over 30 are marine staff. The team also include 12 family members of staff, including six members within the third generation. Staff numbers at Ferguson Transport & Shipping have tripled in the last five years. As a result of this growth, the firm in early 2015 expanded its head office space at Annat in Corpach and its office in Kishorn to accommodate the encouraging and continuing growth of the company. Various careers, including driving jobs, are currently advertised through different departments.
In the last 12 months, Ferguson Transport & Shipping have won numerous awards, including: Scottish Transport Rewards 2015 – Environmental Haulier of the Year; Lochaber Ideas Week Awards 2015 – Best Lochaber Business; Highland Business Awards 2015 – Lochaber Business of the Year and Lochaber Ideas Week Awards 2014 – Great Local Employer Award.
