Meet Sarah Ralston, our Trainee Human Resources & Business Admin Support
Name: Sarah Ralston
From: Fort William
Occupation: Trainee Human Resources & Business Admin Support
What is your educational background?
I went to Lochaber High School in Fort William and then moved to Glasgow to study for three years and got my degree in Marketing and Business Law from the University of Strathclyde. I made the decision not to complete my honours year and moved back home.
What is your role in the company?
I started with the company in January 2013 as a Trainee Business Support Administrator based in the HR office. As I progressed in this role I moved on to assist and train predominantly in Human Resources.
Tell us about your training?
I attended a one day HR for Beginners workshop in Glasgow in 2013 which was run by ACAS. This was a good overview of different aspects of HR and gave me a small insight into what lay ahead. I am currently studying a CIPD Certificate in Human Resource Practice at Inverness college. This consists of weekly online chat sessions and an evening workshop session in Inverness every three weeks. I am also learning a lot on the job from Jacqueline MacLeod, who is the Head of HR within the company. She is faced with my never ending questions each day and is always happy to help. Once my college course is finished, that won’t be the end of my training as HR is an area which requires continual learning which keeps the job interesting and challenging.
What is your day to day role?
My day to day role varies greatly, it is a fast paced environment and things can change at the drop of a hat. In a typical day I could be inducting new staff or interviewing candidates for the various positions we have within the company to arranging training and assisting employees with any enquiries they may have.
What’s the best/favourite thing about your job?
At the end of the recruitment process I find it really rewarding phoning the successful candidate to make them a job offer. In addition to this I enjoy the variety of work my role brings and the challenges that an HR office can face.
What do you like to do in your spare time/ hobbies?
After I left uni I completed my BASI Snowboard Instructor course and was teaching snowboarding at Nevis Range for two seasons. During the winter I try to get up Nevis Range every weekend, when the Scottish weather lets me!
Favourite place to visit/holiday?
I love to go on snowboarding holidays, the weather and snow conditions are much better than Scotland. I was in Les Arcs, France in January this year and I am already planning a holiday for next winter.Careers, HR, Human Resources, Nevis Range, Outdoor Capital of the UK, University of Strathclyde
